Disgusting Science

(This is a script for a forthcoming podcast episode)

http://www.ogps.wa.edu.au/room_3/images/Jesse%26Cameron-thumb.JPGHi, my name is Racheal-Lee and today we will be talking about Disgusting Science. We investigated how to grow mould. We will be talking about what we did, how it was made and how it made us feel. We hope you enjoy it.

We got some bread and put some butter on the bread (and some people who wanted different ingredients or different colours of bread did that). Then we got a plastic bag and put the sandwich in there. We had to keep it in the cupboard or freezer for six weeks.

Make sure you are safe (when experimenting with mould) because the germs are enormous. Let me give you some tips of safety. When you are making mould or begin to look at it, you must not touch your face even if the mould is in a sealed bag. You are allowed to touch your face only after you wash your hands. If the mouldy sandwich is in a bag you can't open it under any circumstances. Keep all the bags in a box because the mould can spread and you don't want that to happen. Don't eat the mouldy sandwich under any circumstances because you could get really really sick. Trust me, I know. Mould has different colours and could make you sick.

We found out that mould grows best on brown bread with moisture and hot air. The bigger the sandwich, the more mould. If you leave it for a long time, it grows heaps of mould! http://www.ogps.wa.edu.au/room_3/images/disgusting%20028%20%28Small%29-thumb.jpg

Mould grows best in bedrooms, bathrooms, laundries and toilets. Here are some ways to help stop mould:
- Don't leave food out!
- Seal your food in bags!
- Put your food in the freezer
- Check your school bag after school to see if you have a mouldy banana and put it in the bin

Doing this experiment made some people feel sick. This was probably because the mould was stinky and looked feral and disgusting. It made it hard to breathe for some people.

We shared what we found using our think.com pages. We started by taking photographs of our mouldy sandwiches and then we wrote our predictions about what we would see six weeks later. Next, we invited people to look at our pages. It was hard work but we got past it.

Goodbye and we hope you had a great time listening to our segment. Hope you join in next time. This is the Orange Grove school saying... GOODBYE!!!!
