Egypt Excursion to the WA Museum

http://www.ogps.wa.edu.au/room_3/images/DSC00659-thumb.jpgOn Tuesday 21 November 2006, the Year 4 / 5 class went to the Western Australian Museum in Perth City. We were originally going to go on the 31st of October but Amany, the girl who was taking us, was in hospital. We arrived at school early so that we could leave at 9:00 am. We got back at 12:40pm. When we got back, it was lunch time. We didn't get much time so Mr Fuller gave us thirty minutes extra time to play.

http://www.ogps.wa.edu.au/room_3/images/DSC00669-thumb.jpgOn the way to the WA Museum we went on a green and yellow bus. It was normal but on the back it was black. It also had holes in it. On the way back we had a different bus which has side seats and it was easy to move around in. The bus had emergency stop buttons but nobody pressed them.

The people who went were Meisha (a baby brother of Klara), Mr Fuller (our class teacher), Christine's Mum, Klara's Mum, Trent's Mum and our class. Christine, Klara and Trent are students in our class.

Amany is an Egyptologist. She has found tombs. She has an unusual accent and she was our host. We think she is Egyptian. She had brown skin.

http://www.ogps.wa.edu.au/room_3/images/DSC00675-thumb.jpgWe went into a 200 year old jail for our Egypt tour. It had stairs and a lot of spiderwebs. It was dark. The first thing we did was a mind map to show Amany what we knew about Egypt. Then we discussed the 'afterlife' and watched a special slideshow. The slideshow had pictures of people who had been mummified.

Then we made a mummy out of a doll. We put a hook up its nose and took out all the organs. We put make-up on the dummy and wrapped the it up in bandages. It looked weird.

As well as the Egypt tour we went to the "Dinosaurs to Diamonds" and the "Space" tour. To get to the tour we had to go into an elevator. It was silver and aluminium with four buttons and two dents in the rail. We got to look in it.

We went to the museum to learn more about Egypt. We had fun there but some people thought it was boring. The reason we went to the museum is because Egypt is our theme this term. We also went so we could find out more about history.

Our new undercover area

Hi, we're Podkids Australia, and today we will be talking about our new undercover area. The subjects are: who built it, how it was built, when it was built and the purpose of it. We hope you enjoy it.

http://www.ogps.wa.edu.au/room_3/images/undercover_area-thumb.jpgWe have a new undercover area for having lunch when the weather is not with us. We also use the undercover area for activities when it rains. It blocks out the sun so we don't get sunburnt.

In our new undercover area, there are ten long white lights. It also has some skylights. There are about ten of them. It has a creamy colour for the roof. It also uses limestone to build the ground. The colour of the whole place is a mixture of a little bit of blue and some grey, but mainly a creamy colour. There is also a tin roof with plastic. There is a ramp for people in a wheelchair.

The undercover area was built in two stages. Last year, on the Christmas holidays, the undercover area was going up. The builders put the tin roof and the poles up. Then on the July holidays, the concrete flooring, lights and the ramp went in. We have been waiting 18 whole years for the undercover area!

The first thing that they did was they dug some holes for the poles and the next thing they did was they put the posts in and put some cement around it. Then they put the frame in. After that, they put the sheeting on to hold it there. Then they put the limestone blocks and limestone concrete in to make the foundation for the concrete.

Lots of contractors were working on the undercover area at different times. They worked as a team on the undercover area. We have had a lot of experiences since the builders have been here.

We just love our new undercover area.

Animal Helper - Meerkats

Hello. This is Animal Helper, and I just want to let you know who you will hear, and what you will be hearing about. I'm Christine and the other people you will be hearing from are Trent, Corinne and Corey. This time on Animal Helper, our topic is meerkats. I hope you enjoy it.

Corinne:

Hi I am Corinne. I am going to give you an informative brief on meerkats. Meerkats live in south Africa, mostly in the Kalahari Desert. Their cousins are called the mongoose. Two of the meerkat's predators are foxes and wildcats.

Meerkats are born with little hair not full coats and their eyes are closed. Meerkats enjoy eating scorpions from their biome. Meerkats are sometimes taken out of their biome and put into enclosures but only for two reasons: they may be injured or orphaned.

Please take care of them. They are so beautiful, it would be such a shame for them to be endangered.

Trent:

Meerkats get killed and tortured. They stand up and watch for leopards, because leopards are really mean predators. They dig tunnels to hide from predators. They sound an alarm to warn that a predator is coming. They live about 12 to 14 years.

Corey:

Hello. My name is Corey and the segment I am writing about is what meerkats eat. Meerkats eat bugs and other kinds of insects like beetles or worms. Meerkats also eat grass and scorpions. Wow! Meerkats eat alot.

Christine:

Homes in Japan

Now, I bet you're wondering what our topic is..... It is Japanese homes!

Hello. I am Trent. I will be talking about bedrooms in Japan. Their doors are sliding doors. You have to slide the doors to open them. When they enter their rooms, they take off their shoes. Bedbugs are dangerous. They bite you in your sleep!!

Hello. I am Cameron. I will be talking about how the Japanese built their homes (in the olden days). The Japanese built their homes out of solid wood. They had wells inside their homes to provide water. Another fact is that they built their doors more solidly than we build our doors.

In cold times in Japan, people use a heated table called 'kotashu'. Their mats are called 'tatami'. (It is a straw mat). When they go to eat their daily meals at a kotashu table, they must sit on a cushion called 'tataku'.

Transport in Japan

They have a very fast train called the bullet train, but I can't say too much because Mathew will explain all that.

We will begin with Mathew talking about the AMAZING bullet train. Take it away Mathew!

Bullet trains are the fastest trains in the world. Did you know that bullet trains can travel 275 km / hour.

Japan is very proud of its high-speed train system, the Shikansen, or bullet train. It is known and admired throughout the world. It transports large numbers of people to faraway destinations quickly and safely.

When did this train system come into being? The first trains began rolling in Japan in 1872. The first bullet train was made in 1964 for the Olympic Games.

The train goes for about 27,400 km or about two-thirds of the way around the world.

Japanese People

Hello. This is the AC / DC group. You will be listening to Paige, Tyrin, Kane and Amelia. We are talking about people in Japan.

http://www.ogps.wa.edu.au/room_3/images/openphotonet_dcp_0185-thumb.jpg There are 8 million people in Tokyo, and there are 126 million people in Tokyo so it is really crowded in Japan. Tokyo is one of the biggest cities in the world.

People are very crowded in Japan because of the mountains. They sit on cushions because they need space. They also have little tables, not big tables, so they can use them for other things. They have very small bathtubs and bathrooms.They have no room for big fat and wide tables or chairs.

The Japanese created Godzilla and Yu-Gi-Oh. Godzilla is a movie, if you didn't know. Last but not least, Yu-Gi-Oh is a card game (for the people that didn't know).

One million people have to travel an hour or more to get to work. Tokyo has more people in shops and offices than in factories. Japan has 11 cities.

People in Japan have different eyes to us. Nearly all people in Japan have black hair. When they have babies, they have a kind of flat nose.

When people go to high school, they have to wear long white socks.

Japanese people love fashion. Japanese wealthy people used to wear a beautiful kimono (robe). They wear kimonos to weddings too.Women in Japan love make-up, but they look really different with it on.

Rugby Report

It was a sweaty, hot day. There was a light blue sky. The rugby carnival happened on Wednesday the 22nd of March 2006. The other schools tried really hard.

Well, the Brumbies won rugby touchdown. All of the Brumbies players got a pencil case and it had the Western Force on it. It had blue and white. The Brumbies team was my team (by Brandan).

The OGPS Force players said it was not fair, but they shook hands.

We didn’t have the carnival to win. We did it for fun, and we got to meet different schools and the schools had fun. The schools enjoyed the game and it was a good game.

The people who helped were Dazman Patrick and Dwayne. Patrick came to help us play rugby. Gooseberry hill played for one year and OGPS played for eight weeks. OGPS is really good at rugby.

The Western Force players came and helped us to start to play rugby. The Western Force is the Perth rugby team.

It was very, very fun and I wish for another one.

Including Others

Hi my name is Amelia. We will be talking about including others.

Tayla will talk about kindness and all other ways to look after one another. Corey will talk about being friendly and listening. Please listen to what they say.

Please be kind to people around you. Even if you don’t like them, please still be kind.

Please look after people and friends because they can get hurt. You don’t have to punch people to hurt them you can say things that hurt people.

Being friendly is looking out for your friends, welcoming visitors, giving people presents and many other kind things.

Being friendly is not just being kind. It’s everything.

Talking is helpful sometimes, like for instance if you have a problem you can go to someone and talk about it.

Please look after your friends. Keep an eye out of your friends because people can get hurt.

We hope you learnt to be kind to other people and remember work together to make this a bully free school.

Dolphin report

People who helped make this segment are, Paige, Trent, Corinne and me Christine. Page will be talking about our subject dolphins, there life and facts. Trent will be talking about their predators and their dangers in the ocean. Corrine will be talking about how to look after a dolphins. I will be talking about their food.

The dolphins eat different species of fish. They are known to swallow their food whole.

Dolphins get killed and tortured by men. Men and sharks are killing them. Dusky sharks tiger sharks and bull sharks are there main predators. Sewage is their worst killer. Some people catch them in nets and cut off their fins and then dump their bodies in the water to bleed to death. Jetties can drown there habitats.

Please don’t kill the dolphins. They rule!!

Hi there. I’m Corinne and I’m here to talk about all the different ways we can help dolphins from being in danger.

Dolphins get caught in fishing nets so a way you can help them is by staying away from their habitat. Dolphins are affectionate creatures. You can go see them in deep waters. Just don’t hurt or scare them.

Killer sharks are on the dolphins enemy List. Some dolphins are brutally killed by killer whales. Sometimes killer sharks harm a dolphin by biting them. But we can’t help that, so lets make them like us humans. If you adopt a dolphin you pay at least 30 or 60 dollars a month. Paige is next. Take it away Paige.

Dolphins live to about 48 years They sometimes don’t even live to see their mums. Sometimes their babies get hunted and killed. They normally have a baby once a year. Sometimes they can’t find food so they die. Dolphins are getting extinct. They have a really hard life so don’t make it harder.

Now we are going to tell you some facts. They’re beautiful and flexible. They’re beautiful creatures. They’re really smart and intelligent.

Wrestling Report

Sometimes wrestling is real. Sometimes its not real. If something goes wrong in the WWE, they can break their legs, arms and backs. Some of the names are fake and rude. Some of the blood is real.

The rules are submission, tap, sleeper and KO.

Tap is when they give up or just can’t take it any more. The way they tap out is to tap their hand on the ground three times and the other player wins.

Sleeper is when they lock their arms and push their head really hard until the other player falls asleep.

Pin, or pinfall, means to hurt them really badly then throw them to the ground and lay on them. You don’t let them get off for three seconds.

KO means to hurt them really badly and throw them to the ground and 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10… KO!! KO means ‘knock out’

Our favourite wrestler is Kurt Angle. The names of some of our favourite wrestlers are the Boogie Man, Big Show, John Cena, Undertaker, Batista, Mysterio, Triple H and Hulk Hogan.

We like Kurt Angle because, first of all, Kurt Angle has the world heavy-weight championship belt and he’s strong. Our favourite move is the angle slam.

The WWE has main events like Wrestlemania, No Way Out, Taboo Tuesday, Royal Rumble, No Mercy, Masterlock Challenge, New Year’s Revolution, SummerSlam, Backlash and others.

Our favourite event is Royal Rumble because 30 wrestling men come in and they all have to throw each other out of the ring. Ray Mysterio won the last Royal Rumble.

Visit by the Life Education Van

DSC02168%20%28Small%29.JPGOn Monday 13th of February 2006, the Year 4 / 5 class went to the Life Education van. It was at Orange Grove Primary School, next to the Year 1 / 2 classroom. Every classroom took it in turns to visit. It is the biggest van we have ever seen in the school.

First, we looked at a giant dummy named Tam. We tapped her body three times and she lit up. We touched her head, throat and her chest. It was so fun, it was the best Life Education van ever! We learnt about bullying, (our) bodies and drugs. We learnt about different types of medicines.

Amanda is a teacher. She is also Harold's friend. Amanda's family come from New Zealand. She knows a lot about the human body and drugs. She is very new to Life Education. She is blondish brown in hair colour. Amanda loves seeing children every day. Amanda is healthy.

DSC02163%20%28Small%29.JPGHarold is a giraffe. He lives in a box. Harold is sad because his best friend left the school. He has a diary. He tells jokes. Harold loves kids that are loud. He loves smiling. Harold hates the "p word" (puppet).

The van is cool because it has air-conditioning. It has lots of posters about health and bullying. You can write to Harold and he has a post box. There is a big picture of Harold on the side of the van.

Our first piece of group writing.

Check out the great report about our school's administration block (below). Each group in our class wrote and edited one paragraph. We will be reading this report as part of our first podcast sometime in the next two weeks.

Our New Administration Building

Dear parents, teachers, carers and students. The year 4 / 5 class had a live tour of the new office. We were the first class to go in. We asked Mrs Nottle how much it cost. It cost…. over $100,000. Well, that's heaps!

Our new admin block has a ramp for disabled people and stairs for easy access. The rooms also have easy access with two outside doors. There is new bitumen for parking spaces and paving for under the tree.

There are four rooms in the office. One is Mrs McHugh’s. One is Mr Wilson’s (the new Deputy Principal). One is Mrs Nottle’s and one is a meeting room. The meeting room is a kitchen too. The room has no furniture, apart from Mrs McHugh’s table. There will be new furniture in the room when its finished.

There are lots of windows in the new office. There is air-conditioning in all rooms. There are six phones to call the staff room and speak to parents. Mrs Nottle has a siren, but only uses it for emergencies. There is an emergency button for disabled people. Mrs Nottle hopes to put in a lovely water feature.

So, what’s going to happen to the old office? They are going to knock down the old wall in the office. It’s going to become a teacher’s workroom. The staff room is going to stay where it is.
