March - April in the Year Two / Three

Assembly

What excitement, our assembly.  The Year Two / Three ran the Assembly in our new undercover area.  It was the day the Undercover area was officially opened.   Our class item was songs about pirates and what a dastardly bunch we were.

Goodbye

This term we say goodbye to Kobe.  Kobe and his sister have been at our school for a long time and are now moving.  We hope Kobe has as many friends at his new school as he had here.  Have a great time at your new home Kobe.

Technology Miss Anderton has been teaching us how to use a digital camera.  Later this year we will be using cameras to create stories, to record daily activities and important events in the school.

Mathematics

BIG numbers feature this month. Just how big is 1000? Counting by one hundreds, and understanding thousands has been a focus this month. Science

Crystals are such fascinating things. We began by dissolving salt into warm water and adding a little food dye to help us remember which was which. The saturated salt water was then put onto trays.  Over a few days the water evaporates and we were left with beautifully shaped small salty crystals.  The next week we looked at Epsom salt crystals and salt crystals that form on a piece of string that we dangled into the jar.  Imagine our excitement when the very next day our string held a large Epsom salt crystal.  The following day it held hundreds of tiny crystals. We left it over the Long Weekend thinking that it would grow even bigger crystals.  However, much to our disappointment the crystals had all dissolved and were now reformed on the bottom of the jar.  What happened? Something to find out!  The salt crystals were slower to grow but are making quite impressive displays.  Mikayla’s uncle brought some crystals back from a cave in the north.

Pet Rocks

Who could resist having a pet that mum will let sleep in our bed, sit on the table, and go to school to sit on our desk.  Welcome to our Pet Rocks. We searched for and found our very own Pet Rocks.  At school we glued eyes onto them. Then we analysed them! We looked at their weight and size. We scratch tested them with our fingers and nails.  We poured vinegar over them to see if they would fizz. Some did, they were limestone. We sank them in water to see if they were volcanic and would float.  They were very patient while we found out as much as we could about our little special pets. Over the following week we made a home for our Pet Rock and then helped our Pet Rock write its very own Journal.

Sport

We have been divided into two groups. Mrs Veen teaches one group beanbag skills; Mr Harrington teaches the second group ball skills. Over the four weeks the teachers have noticed quite an improvement in skills.  Next term we will swap over for more fun. Hockey Unfortunately the Hocky lessons have not taken place because the coach has not been able to get here. Maybe next term?

This term

Language

In Story Writing we have been writing and publishing our stories into our Story writing books.  These are very popular during Silent Reading time.  It feels good to have other people read our work and we get to read theirs.  Lachlan has discovered Shape books and has been writing his own Shape books. He then illustrates the books. Lachlan is such a talented artist.

ReadingThis term the class will be examining reading through the Metacognitive approach.  We have looked at how to find out what words mean, how to find information and how to sequence actions as you do in a recipe. Spelling.We have been putting the spelling words into our Homework books each week and learning five each night.  Over the term we have noticed that we all take much more care with our spelling.

Society and Environment

Several Parents have come into the class to talk about their jobs.

Our first parent was Mrs Ozanne who talked to us about banking.  She does the School Banking for us.

Thank you to Mr Lennon who came to speak about his three jobs, announcing at the cricket, calling the football on the radio and being a DJ.Thank you to Mrs Karniewicz who came to speak to us about her many jobs. They include being a School Community Liaison Officer, a Day-care worker, and a Special Needs Assistant.  Year 6 /7 are going away on camp. They organized a Fun Day for us.

We had a great time.

Easter

Soon it will be Easter Holidays.  We would like to wish all the children and the teachers a safe and happy holiday.

What's on in the Year Two / Three

 Mathematics

We are revising and completing work on numbers 1 – 1000. Each is completed as a unit of work, which is then assessed, to enable the teacher to better help and extend those children who need it.

As part of the Mathematics programme we also have a Mathematics Box.  In this box are a variety of activities to engage and extend their knowledge.  Rainforestmaths.com is also used as a consolidation and extension activity.

Science

In Science we have been looking at the properties of water. In the first week we experimented with Floating.  First we put an egg in warm water; it sat on the bottom of the container.  Then we carefully added salt and stirred. At first nothing happened then slowly with each new spoon of salt, the egg began to rise until it was floating up half out of the water. We found out that boats need to be careful if they are going from salty to fresh water. If they have too much cargo they just might sink.  In the next activity we wanted to know if polar bears could eat the ice at the North Pole. Was it salty or fresh?  Using ice cube trays we put fresh water into half of the tray and salty water into the other half.  We coloured the fresh water so we could tell which was which.  We had a bit of trouble trying to make sure they didn’t mix.  After a whole night in the freezer, we could see that the salty water had not frozen at all, while the fresh water had.  Polar bears can eat the ice because it is probably not salty. Our next two projects will be making salt crystals by evaporating salty water and growing our own Crystals. The children could try these at home to show you.

Sport

We were very lucky to participate in AusKick.  Cameron Walker from the Fremantle Dockers and Demons came to give the whole class fun activities to introduce them to AusKick.  AusKick is a great way for girls and boys to get out there and get fit.

Language

In Story Writing we have been writing stories about our holidays and about ourselves. Sometimes the teacher chooses the topic, sometimes the children choose.  Each story has been typed by Mrs Mathews J and published into our Story Books. These books go onto the big bookshelf so we can read each other’s stories.  We plan, talk about, write, edit (CHIMP), illustrate and publish our stories.ReadingThis term the class will be examining reading through the Metacognitive approach. This means that we look carefully at words and learn techniques to better understand language. We will also be undertaking activities from the Language Box, which contains a variety of activities. Each group of four children do an activity together and rotate around until they have experienced each activity.  Some activities are independent and others will be working with the teachers. Working with just four children at a time enables us to more effectively help at the point of need and to undertake more complicated activities.  Spelling. This year we have a New Wave Spelling Book. Each List covers a different sound of the English Language.  From Year two to seven each class would be doing the same sound.  For example, the c/k sound covers words like cat, kitten, duck, school, queen. The exercises in each book are different but the whole class can focus on that sound for the week.   The words go into their Homework book to learn five words each night.

 Society and Environment

This term we are looking at Communities how they work and how people work together.  As part of these studies we have invited parents to come in to talk about their work experiences.   You will have seen a note in their Diaries, if you are able to come to talk to the class please let us know and we can make a time.  No job too small or uninteresting.
