Welcome to Year 5 / 6 / 7

Welcome to the 2008 school year everyone. We have got off to a flying start, especially with the new laptop computers! It was quite mindblowing and very exciting to see every student face to face with their own computer and fully engaged with the programmes the were using. Miss Anderton and I are looking forward to working with the Year 5/6/7 class this year and I will be teaching physical education from Years 1-7 as well. We hope the students all have a productive and successful year and look forward to catching up with the parents soon.

Year 6/7 Newsletter

Year 6/7 Term Four Newsletter

Dear Students, Parents and CareGivers,

Welcome to Term 4, 2007. This is the last school term in primary school for our Year 7 students and an important term for consolidating their learning before they progress to secondary school.

The Year 7 Graduation Lunch will be held at The Esplanade Hotel, Fremantle, on Monday 10 December.

This term the students will be involved in the following activities;

*Art-there will be two art sessions each week. One of these sessions replaces the Italian lesson as our Italian teacher is no longer working at our school.

*Science-in keeping with the theme of Energy and Change, we will be studying recycling. The students will research materials that can be recycled, make a product from recycled materials and design a TV advertisement to promote their product. We will video the best advertisements for viewing later this term.

Physical Education-the students will participate in a multi-sports programme. I will negotiate the sports to be played with the students.

In English- this term we will be exploring components of the Viewing strand. Viewing focuses on developing the student’s critical literacy skills. Another aspect of English that we will be focusing on this term will be writing conventions and punctuation.

In Technology & Enterprise- we will be exploring the different systems that exist in our world, from basic human systems to systems that exist within our community.

The students should be congratulated on the outstanding research into different types of resources in Society & Environment last term. The students all chose different methods of presenting their research; however, all were completed to a very high standard. Keep an eye out on the website for the SOSE projects on Resources- they will be in the form of Podcasts and PowerPoint Presentations.

A special congratulations to Jessica S who has been accepted into Kalamunda SHS on an art scholarship-a great achievement. Well done Jess!

It is the final term of the year and the year 6/7 students are the leaders and role models of OGPS, it is essential that the behaviour of our class is impeccable, as the students in younger years look to the older ones for appropriate behaviour at this stage of the year.

Welcome to Year 6 / 7

WELCOME BACK!

We would like to welcome you all back for another exciting year of learning at OGPS!

Your teachers this year are Mr Wilson and Miss Anderton. Mr Wilson will be teaching Tuesdays and Wednesdays and Miss Anderton will be teaching Monday, Thursday, and Friday. This tandem situation will be managed with close collaboration and regular communication to ensure smooth transition between teaching days.

We will be arranging a class meeting and inviting all parents to attend so that we can discuss our expectations of the students and explain the inner runnings of Room 2. If you have any concerns, queries or issues throughout the year please feel free to come in and talk to either of us or make an appointment to meet more formally.

Our class themes this year will be negotiated with the students during the first week back. We will keep you posted!

We look forward to this years learning journey. See you all Wednesday!

Term 4 in the Year 6 / 7 class

Welcome back to Year 6/7s, Term 4 is about to begin! We anticipate that this will be a very busy term, culminating with the graduation of the Year 7 students.

Parents please ensure that your children are fully equipped with pencils, pens, erasers, rulers etc., as we had many students slow in completing their work, because they needed to borrow pencils from others.

Term 4 is a very exciting time for Year 7s, however, they still need to be focussed on work applications, so we would appreciate parental support in helping them to achieve this.

A more detailed class newsletter, outlining activities for the term, will follow in the near future.

CSIRO-Crest Science & Technology Awards

CSIRO has developed a quality science and technology programme for primary and secondary school students throughout Australia. On completion of a theme of work, the students can achieve an 'award' from CSIRO. The award levels, which increase in difficulty, are green, orange and blue. A number of the students have already achieved a green award and have commenced work towards the orange award for the theme 'A Windy Day Today'. These students will be presented with their green certificates this week. To achieve the orange award the students will be required to complete some activities at home. Please ask your child about the homework they are doing to achieve this award.

The Mystery of the Marie Celeste

One of the greatest maritime mysteries is that of the Marie Celeste. On December 4, 1872 it was found floating adrift in the Atlantic Ocean. The entire crew and the passengers had mysteriously vanished, never to be seen again.
The mystery has never been solved but the year 6/7 class have come up with some very interesting ideas. Here are some of their opening paragraphs.....

One still day, my papa Captain Benjamin Briggs, my mummy Sarah Jane Briggs, Sophie Margaret Briggs (me) and eight sailors, sailed off on a voyage over the Atlantic Ocean. We were going to deliver wines and liquors. Everyone on board was partying. My papa was laughing and enjoying company with the sailors. Mummy was playing the piano and then, suddenly, there was a screeching sound and a sailor came running in with tears staining his face. He cried, "my mate is dead!" I gaped in terror
By Jemma

One miserable day while sailing across the Atlantic Ocean aboard the Marie Celeste, Captain Benjamin and his wife Sarah and his crew were below deck dancing. Captain Benjamin climbed above deck for fresh air. Suddenly there appeared out of nowhere a glowing light around the ship. He heard voices whispering. He ran below deck to see if it was his wife and crew, but NO ONE WAS THERE. They had all vanished.....
by David

One gloomy day on board the Marie Celeste, the Captain, his wife, his daughter and crew were just about to eat a lovely meal. Just then, the ship went rocking from side to side!! A vicious army of sea vampires climbed aboard. Boards clattered on the deck and loud foot steps were on their way down to the galley.....
by Brett

After one long gloomy day, the crew from the Marie Celeste said "Goodnight " to each other and went to bed. Soon "Devil Day" began and the Marie Celeste started rocking from side to side. The crew woke up and the cook Jim ,and the Captain Benjamin Briggs rushed outside to see what was happening. When they looked around the Marie Celeste, everything was fine. All of a sudden, something rose from the ocean with big, red beady eyes and huge horns. Instantly, they realised it was the Devi!
by Brandon B

One stormy day in 1877, we were heading towards the Bermuda Triangle. Captain John Briggs was an experienced sailor and captain. Captain John and his crew members including his wife Mary and 2 year old daughter Sophie, were on their way when suddenly there was a huge crash against the side of the ship followed by a deafening moan. They all blocked our ears in pain. Suddenly, five huge tentacles came right out of the water and grabbed Sophie and dragged her under.......
by Jessica S

My name is Elizabeth Briggs and this is my story. We were on our way to America on board the Mary Celeste. We were all worried because we were going through the Bermuda Triangle. On the third night of our voyage, we were eating dinner in the galley. Suddenly, I heard my daughter screaming and the crew yelling, so I went out to investigate.....
by Charlotte

Hi, my name is Captain Jack Sparrow, and this is my story. One terrible evening, me and my manly crew were about to depart on our adventure on the Marie Celeste. We had a cargo of rum and Tequila but suddenly we heard an eerie, unhuman screeching sound. It almost burst my ear drums.Suddenly a huge head popped out of the star board side of the ship and it grabbed me so that I couldn't breathe. Then it suddenly let me go and it slithered back under the water. I stumbled into the galley and all of my manly crew had disappeared without a trace!,,,,

Solar Ovens

http://www.ogps.wa.edu.au/images/DSC01496%20%28Small%29-thumb.JPGDuring first term the Year 6 / 7 students designed and constructed solar cookers. They tested the cookers using a thermometer to find out if they would be hot enough to cook food. The students made some improvements to their cookers and finally cooked pizza in them. Some of the cookers were very successful even though it was only about 23 degrees. One of the cookers is pictured above!

Year 6/7 Autobiographies

Here are some of our students autobiographies-we hope you enjoy them.

THE LIFE OF BRANDON
By Brandon B

I was born in 1994 the year the Dockers were granted their licence to play footy.

When I turned one I wasn’t much of a horror, I was just a poopy one year old with some funny words.

Later on when I turned two I became a horror that would break glass and run into the windows. Mum and Dad couldn’t handle me.

At the age of three I started to become excited because I knew it was a year till kindy.

When I turned four the nerves started to kick in because kindy was huge and it was scary when I didn’t see my mum.

Later on in my life I became a big five year old. Not just any five year old, a five year old that started primary school at Orange Grove.

When I turned six I had my tonsils out, grommets put in and my nose cauterized.

When I was seven I started playing Auskick for the Kalamunda Tigers. Also when I was seven I started playing tennis at Lesmurdie and I had lots of fun. My favourite tennis player is Leyton Hewitt.

When I was eight I started swimming at Swimrite in Kenwick and I loved it. Also when I was eight I started my second year of Auskick.

When I turned nine I started playing under 9’s for the Kalamunda Tigers and that year I kicked my first goal.

Later when I was ten I took a music test to see if I was good enough for guitar. Also when I was ten and in year six I found out that I got the high score for the music test.

When I turned eleven I started guitar with Mr A. Also when I was eleven I started swimming for the Kalamunda Seahawks. I did my first swim meet and my freestyle time was 38 seconds.

By Jeremy B

In 1994 at 3.30pm I was born in Hornsby Hospital (Sydney), I was 9.4 pounds on the 6th of April.

In 1995 I started walking every-where, my Aunty told me that I would stand on her dog’s tail.

When I was two I flew from Sydney to Perth because my Mum and Dad split up.

In 1997 my Mum and I met my Step Dad and Step Brother. One year after my sister was born she is such a horror she goes in my room and takes by K-Zones.

Then a year after that my twin brother and sister were born, one boy and one girl.

When I was six I had lost both my front teeth and celebrated the new millennium.

In 2001 my Step Dad bought a motorbike and I drove through a fence and was still on it!

In 2002 I moved from Busselton which is three hours down South. All of my old friends live down there. I still keep in touch with half of them.

When I was nine we had a cat named Kit Cat. After we had the cat for nine months it died under my bed.

In 2004 my family went to Aqua at Aqua there is a touch pool where there are touchable stingrays and fish.

Last year in term four I came to this school and have met a lot of friends.

In the recent school holidays I went to visit my real Dad in Sydney. I have three brothers there that are sometimes annoying and sometimes fun. I got showered with gifts and went to lots of places.

AND THAT’S HALF OF MY LIFE!

MY LIFE
By Jemma Kell

When I was born I brought great pleasure.

When I was one I met Pascarl and we have been best buds ever since. When I was one and a half I could walk.

When I was two Pascarl, Jayden and I went to Playgroup together, it was a lot of fun.

When I was three I went to Coral Bay, I had a great time.

When I was four I learnt to ride a bike without trainer wheels.

When I was five my family and Pascarl’s family went to Doubtful Bay and Jordan fell out of a bunk bed and fell onto mum’s bed. Pascarl and I were at one end and we heard a bang and it was Jordan’s head.

I was six when I was playing on a bicycle with no wheels on the back, it was an old one and it didn’t have a guard over the wheel .I fell onto the wheel and cut my knee. Mum had to rush to the hospital with me. We went to a doctor and he spoke with a Kiwi accent. Mum and Dad couldn’t understand him and started to stress. Then he said “no fit”. He meant the muscles. I thought it looked like baked beans, it was cool.

When I was six I got my ginger cat Jingartom for my birthday, he scratched me to death.

When I was seven my grandad died.

When I was eight on my birthday I cut my foot with a carving knife and I got my ears pierced. Also when I was eight we got Rex and he is eleven months.

When I was nine I learnt to ski and no one taught me. Also when I was nine I went on a plane for the first time and saw the snow. I also fractured my finger.

Last year I got to see my cousin from Canberra his name is Colin and Erin he’s girlfriend. We visited them and they came here. Banjo and Tango died last year and I was very sad. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince came out it was exciting for me.

This year Travis, Jordan and Doug went on a helicopter ride to celebrate their 13th birthdays.

In my past I have learnt many things and have failed as well.

Rugby Gala Day

http://www.ogps.wa.edu.au/images/DSC01297%20%28WinCE%29-thumb.jpgThe Rugby Gala Day on Wednesday 22 March was a great success. Our students showed excellent skills and sportsmanship as they played against teams from our school and Gooseberry Hill Primary School. Three of the Western Force players even attended and joined in the games, much to the delight of the kids. At the end of the carnival the Force players signed posters and other memorabilia so that all the students went home with at least one souvenir from the day. I even heard some students talking about joining the local rugby club!!
