Students in Years 2-6 learn Auslan (Australian Sign Language) as their Language Other Than English (LOTE) at Orange Grove Primary School. Auslan is the language of the Australian Deaf community. It consists of fingerspelling, hand shapes, movements and facial expressions, and has its own grammar, syntax and lexicon. Learning Auslan promotes student awareness of people who are deaf (or hard of hearing) and Deaf culture. It also supports visual and kinaesthetic learners and aids in the development of neural pathways and cognitive processes unique to using a visual language.
